Proposed Funding
$3.4M over 3 Years

Executive Summary

CannaMommy.org proposes a three-year rural maternal health pilot in Humboldt County to develop and evaluate a hybrid telehealth and community-based maternal wellness model. The pilot will partner with Cal Poly Humboldt to research maternal health outcomes and train a new generation of maternal health professionals serving rural communities.

This project aims to improve maternal and infant health outcomes while reducing healthcare costs for programs such as Medi-Cal.

  • Doula care
  • Nurse and midwife support
  • Lactation education
  • Telehealth maternal support
  • Herbal and botanical wellness education
  • Rural workforce training

Problem Statement

California continues to face maternal health disparities, particularly in rural regions. Research shows that community-based maternal support programs — especially those incorporating doulas — significantly improve birth outcomes and reduce costly medical interventions.

  • Limited access to maternity care providers
  • Closure of rural birthing facilities
  • Lack of culturally competent maternal support services
  • Transportation barriers for prenatal care
  • Gaps in breastfeeding education and postpartum support

Humboldt County provides a strong location to test a community-driven maternal wellness model that can be replicated across rural California.
